Dog Hotel Stay Packing List: What to Bring and What to Confirm First

Arriving at a hotel with a tired dog is not the moment to discover that dinner means taking turns leaving the room. Before you buy another travel accessory, find out how your dog fits into the stay: where they can go, what you will pay, and what happens when you need to go somewhere without them.

Once those details are settled, packing can stay simple. Bring a familiar place to rest, your usual feeding supplies, and a small cleanup kit. You do not need to recreate your entire house in a hotel room.

Confirm these details before paying

Ask the specific property about your dates and your dog. A general pet-friendly label is not a complete plan for your stay. Keep the reply with your booking confirmation so you can refer to it at check-in.

A message you can copy

Hello, I am considering a stay from [arrival] to [departure] with [number] dog(s), weighing [weight] each. Before I book [room type], could you confirm that they are accepted, the total pet charges and any refundable deposit, and your rules about leaving a dog in the room? Please also confirm any crate requirements, furniture or common-area restrictions, and how housekeeping works with a dog present. Thank you.

This checklist concerns ordinary pet stays. It is not a guide to assistance-animal access rights.

Keep the first-night supplies in one accessible bag. You should not need to unpack the boot just to find a bowl. Our dry-food packing guide covers portions and storage; the large-dog bowl guide explains usable size and packing trade-offs.

Optional sleeping spot: CHEERHUNTING portable dog bed

The selected Blue, Large version is listed at 43 by 26 by 2 inches, with a carry bag and polyester/polyfill construction. It folds for transport. The listing allows gentle machine washing or hand washing, making it a candidate when a bulky bed would take too much space.

Choose by your dog’s resting footprint, not the word “Large.” Measure the space your dog uses while lying comfortably and compare it with the listed dimensions. This is a portable mat, not a promise of orthopedic support or a substitute for a bed your dog needs for a medical reason.

The listing uses both waterproof and water-resistant wording and specifically advises against leaving water on the mat for a long time. Treat it as a washable resting surface, not guaranteed protection against accidents. It is also not recommended by the seller for aggressive chewers. Follow the current care label and let it dry before repacking.

Optional feeding setup: GORILLA GRIP silicone mat

The selected Gray, 18.5 by 11.5-inch mat has a textured surface and a shallow raised edge, listed at approximately 1/8 inch. Its job is modest: put a defined, wipeable area beneath bowls to help collect small spills and stray kibble.

Place your food and water bowls side by side and measure the entire arrangement before ordering. Two large bowls may leave little room inside this size. A shallow lip is not a deep tray and cannot be assumed to contain a full overturned water bowl. Dry the floor beneath it and keep it out of walking routes.

The listing describes silicone and also includes rubber in its material summary; check the manufacturer’s current information if material composition matters to you. The care summary says “Machine Wash” without a detailed cycle in the information reviewed. Follow the supplied instructions rather than assuming it is suitable for any dishwasher or laundry program.

Reuse your cleanup supplies

A hotel stay does not need a second shopping list. Bring your usual waste bags, a towel for your dog, a clean spare, and something washable to hold used items during the drive. Do not assume hotel guest towels are intended for muddy paws.

If you want a dedicated towel, the Tuff Pupper shammy already featured in our cleanup guide has hand pockets and a listed 35 by 15-inch size. An ordinary towel may be enough. The optional ChomChom Original roller is for dry hair on compatible fabrics, not wet mess or your dog’s coat. Use it on your own travel bedding as directed; do not assume it suits a hotel’s upholstery.

Read the full road-trip cleanup routine for separating, washing, and drying supplies. A blanket or mat never overrides restrictions on dogs using beds or furniture. You can bring a suitable cover you already own if the property allows its intended use.

On arrival: set up before you unpack everything

  1. Confirm the pet arrangements at reception and ask about the nearest permitted toilet area.
  2. Keep your dog secured while checking the room for accessible food scraps, loose items, and anything you do not want them investigating.
  3. Set the resting spot and feeding area away from the door swing and walking route.
  4. Keep the leash, waste bags, and paw towel together for the next outing.
  5. Plan dinner around the property’s rules. If your dog cannot stay alone, arrange an option that does not require leaving them.

Before checkout

Collect loose food, bag waste appropriately, and pack your own bedding and bowls. Tell the property promptly about spills or damage rather than attempting an improvised treatment on unfamiliar fabrics. Empty the used-towel bag at a suitable place, wash items according to their labels, and dry them before storage.

Common questions

Do I need to buy a travel bed for one night?

No. Your dog’s existing washable bed or mat may work if you can transport it. A portable option is useful only when it solves a space or handling problem.

Can I leave my dog in a crate while I go out?

Ask the specific hotel before booking. Owning a crate does not override its unattended-pet policy, and an unfamiliar room may require a different plan from home.

Will a protective mat prevent extra cleaning charges?

There is no guarantee. Confirm the property’s terms, use permitted surfaces, and report problems promptly. A mat is a practical aid, not protection from responsibility for damage.

Carry the overnight kit in one manageable load

Once you know which bowls, containers and bedding you are taking, try packing them in a bag you already own. If the layout or carrying method is awkward, our dog travel bag comparison explains the tradeoffs between a complete organizer set, a supplies backpack and a small walking bag. The walking bag is for essentials outside the hotel, not the whole overnight kit.

Keep planning
